Micro Changes Make Macro Impacts
Happy Beautiful Sunday Readers!
This week I had several friends reach out with questions to me about the changes I have made in my life. They were seeking suggestions from health and wellness to career choices. These opportunities to share had me thinking more and more about change overall.
Change can be overwhelming. However, I have found that if we approach change on a micro level, overall we can achieve the macro impacts. Instead of starting a more restrictive diet, working out every day, drinking water, washing your face, reading, practicing yoga, continuing professional learning, taking on a new hobby, and cleaning the house all in the same day - let’s take a moment to start small. All those changes and adjustments to our routine can increase anxiety if we start everything all at once. We also have less chance of building the habit into our daily routine when we try to build 50 routines all at once. Instead, set a small goal. This is similar to product management; we know we want the final product but we need to build and learn iteratively to produce the best value.
Story Time: I know overall I want improved wellness; mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In the past, I would set these huge goals and try to do everything at once. Then I would get discouraged, fall off the wagon, and quit doing everything- becoming more discouraged. This time, instead of focusing on diet, exercise, vitamins, water, yoga, and meditation, I started small. What was one small piece of wellness I could do for an entire month. I decided to start with my daily vitamins. I made a reminder in my phone to take my AM vitamins and PM vitamins, as well as a habit tracker in planner. I am the type of person who loves making lists and checking them off. That would be my focus for 30 days. If I had achieved other things, like daily workout and water, I would celebrate, but the goal was the vitamins. After 30 days, it became a second nature to me, to where I don’t even think about taking the vitamins, I just do it. I know these vitamins will be a small change making a macro change in my wellness. What is a small change in your routine that you want to start?
One more thing - have grace with your self. Life is full of surprises, with both ups and downs. Give yourself grace. Remember that there are only 24 hours in a day. There may be times where you need to re prioritize things in your day where this small change didn’t go as planned. That is OKAY. Don’t get discouraged! You are given a gift of a new day, use that gift and start again.
Let’s work together to make these micro changes that will have macro impacts. Whether its daily vitamins, drinking water, or mediating - together we can build the habits and create the lives we want for ourselves.
Lastly, thank you for taking the time on reading my blog. I appreciate the chance to share. Catch me on Instagram! Now that I have built in my timeline for blogging (see small change), I will be focusing now on posting more to my Instagram where I can share more of my daily life.
Let’s get after it!
Cheers!
